Fast EV Charging Facility at the Empire Bay Tavern

Local electric vehicle  (EV) users received a boost this week with Electrify Bouddi’s announcement that a new fast EV charging facility at the Empire Bay Tavern has reached the final design stage.

Electrify Bouddi has been working for over a year with the Tavern and the NRMA to bring this project to reality. Subject to final approval, the facility will feature two high-capacity DC fast chargers, each with an output of up to 180kW developed and operated by the NRMA. This technology will enable most EVs to reach 80% charge in around 30 minutes, providing a major boost for local residents, visitors, and the region’s transition to clean transport.

“Access to fast charging has been one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption on the Central Coast,” said Mark Ellis, Chair of Electrify Bouddi. “With this project, our community will gain the confidence to make the switch to EVs, knowing they can recharge quickly and conveniently close to home.”

The need for local charging was first identified by Electrify Bouddi members in 2024, when they highlighted how the lack of facilities on the Central Coast was slowing EV uptake. Since then, EV registrations in the 2257 postcode have surged, growing at more than 100% year on year.

For Bouddi, the chargers are expected to deliver wider benefits beyond cleaner transport.

  • Local tourism: Real estate agents report that holidaymakers are increasingly looking for destinations with EV charging.
  • Economic activity: Hosting the chargers at the Empire Bay Tavern will attract visitors, creating flow-on benefits for the Tavern and surrounding businesses.

“Electrify Bouddi is showing how local communities can play a leading role in accelerating the clean energy transition,” said Mark Ellis. “This project is a great example of collaboration between community, business and industry to deliver solutions that benefit everyone.”

Electrify Bouddi looks forward to continuing to support the rollout of practical, community-driven initiatives that reduce emissions, lower costs, create jobs and build a more sustainable future.
